Vandalism

Friday 3/1 2 pm, when setting up the HFDR for calibration by the R/V Kilo Moana, we found that antenna 2 was not responding. All other antennas had clean connections. We did not visit the antenna array to check the cause.

Back Sunday 3/3 night to reenable acquisition, we went down to check antenna 2, and found that

(a) cables to antenna 1, 2, 3, 9, 10 and 11 had been severed and >100' of cables stolen from each

(b) antenna 3 had been stolen

None of the these channels had normal echos, suggesting that between Friday and Sunday, five additional antennas had been vandalized.

Major work will need to take place to restore operation; estimate about 1/2-1 day of work for the radlab team for each broken channel (cable replacement, antenna tuning, cable calibration).

Anyone who witnessed this act of vandalism is welcome to give information the University, through signed or anonymous mail to: Pierre Flament, Department of Oceanography, 1000 Pope road, Honolulu HI 96822.
