Sources of funding for the Radio Oceanography Laboratory

The main source of funds for the laboratory's teaching and research activities is the University of Hawai'i, through the State of Hawai'i general fund, which supports a large fraction of the permanent staff salaries, as well as laboratory space.

Primary support for the laboratory's technical staff and graduate students, as well as for computers, instruments, maintenance, publications and travel, is derived from peer-reviewed proposals submitted to the following agencies:

  • National Science Foundation (NSF) (1988-2007; 2017-2022)
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) (1987-2000)
  • National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Administration (NOAA) (1994-2002 and 2008-present)
  • Office of Naval Research (ONR) (1983-1989; 1996-2015; 2024-)
  • Department of Homeland Security (2008-2013)

Funding from these agencies is gratefully acknowledged as a key factor for the productivity of the laboratory.
