The Radio Oceanography Laboratory's generic HFDRIn 2008, we begun to design our own generic phased array High Frequency Doppler Radar, to overcome many of the shortcomings of existing commercial offerings. The overarching feature of this new instrument is the reliance on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) sub-assemblies and components, to get the lowest cost possible. The technical design is fully documented, including principles, engineering drawings?, manufacturing? and assembly instructions?. It is released as open design/open source under a General Public License. We build this HFDR in-house for academic and research partners on a not-for-profit basis, through a cost center at the Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i. We assist other institutions wishing to establish a similar capacity by transferring our expertise. We also encourage private industry to setup non-exclusive production lines based on the radlab HFDR design, and offer testing and certification on a recharge basis. |
